Because I am procrastinating, I will try to explain this as best I can, but given I last did this in 2007, my maths is a bit rusty.
To understand anything involving motion (ie velocity and acceleration) you MUST graph it. Unless you are a supergenius, it makes it easier to understand if you draw it.
I started with a pretty standard curve: y=x(x-3)(x+3) which looks like this:
As you can see, I also worked out the first derivative (velocity) and the second derivative (acceleration).
The curve represents some random object going through space. Our first derivative tells us the speed and direction of this object.For the purposes of our curve, we’ll assume our curve is moving in m/s.
Our second tells us when it is accelerating or decelerating in m/s^2.
Concentrating on speed for the moment, I’ve plotted some points on my curve with their x value and their velocity.
It’s possibly a bit hard to read, but here they are in case you cant read it (left to right)
If you ignore the number and concentrate on the sign, then you can see there is a pattern. The curve goes up when it has a positive velocity. The curve goes down when it has a negative velocity. It rests in between (its busy work being a curve).
Now shit may or may not get real. If we now consider the second derivative, acceleration, then i will add this on my plot.
Ok aside from being a fucking mess, I will write out the y” values at my x points.
A positive sign says when its speeding up, a negative says when its slowing down. Our curve is slowing down around the bend on the left of (0,0) and speeding up around the bend on the right of (0,0).
For the purposes of your original question, lets think about what the velocity and speed is at each point;
Its a fucking mess of numbers. Lets just look at the +/- at each x value. Keep in mind that + or - indicates a direction.

why it is that the Sherlock fandom on tumblr seems to be heavily implying Sherlock and Watson are gay together? I’ve never watched the show, so I have no idea if this is something tumblr fans have invented or whether the show has strayed from the books, where I always figured Holmes as being asexual.
